Malaysia is set to make history as the first country outside of China to host an official Chinese New Year (CNY) celebration. The announcement was made by Malaysia's Minister of Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, during the China International Travel Mart in Shanghai.

The celebration, scheduled for January 23rd, 2025, reflects the strong cultural ties between Malaysia and China and is expected to attract global attention.

A Groundbreaking Celebration for Malaysia and China

China’s decision to host the first overseas CNY event in Malaysia underscores the deep connections between the two nations. According to Tiong, China is finalizing the list of performers for the event and has urged Malaysia to ramp up its promotional efforts.

The celebration aims to showcase cultural unity and China’s strides in industrializing its cultural sector. It also presents an opportunity to strengthen bilateral ties through cultural exchange and collaborative development in the arts and tourism sectors.

Strengthening Cultural Bonds and Tourism Growth

During the announcement, Tiong highlighted the potential for deeper cooperation between Malaysia and China, including creating platforms for cultural exchange and attracting Chinese investments to boost Malaysia's tourism appeal.

“This event will not only spotlight Malaysia as a destination for global celebrations but also inspire the country’s cultural and tourism growth,” Tiong said.

Plans for ASEAN-Korea Music Festival in Kuala Lumpur 

Tiong also revealed plans for the ASEAN-Korea Music Festival, co-hosted by Malaysia and South Korea in 2025. This event will further solidify Malaysia’s position as a regional cultural hub. 

South Korea will establish a cultural center in Kuala Lumpur next year to celebrate the 65th anniversary of diplomatic relations, enhancing cross-cultural exchanges, as reported by World of Buzz.
