Johor to Switch Back to Saturday-Sunday Weekend Starting January 2025
Johor will officially change its weekend rest days to Saturday and Sunday starting January 1, 2025, reverting from the current Friday-Saturday weekend. This decision was announced by the Regent of Johor, Tunku Ismail Sultan Ibrahim, on October 7, 2024, via his Facebook page.
Key Announcement
Tunku Ismail stated, “With the consent and blessing of His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, and after considering the views of the Johor Islamic Religious Council, I announce that from January 1, 2025, Johor’s weekend will be Saturday and Sunday.”
He added that Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi and the Johor Mufti will review all aspects of this change. He also called for businesses and the government to give Muslim workers enough time to perform their Friday prayers.
Who Will Be Affected?
- The shift will impact around 2.5 million residents in Johor.
- This includes 587,343 students and 1.94 million employees in both government and private sectors.
Datuk Onn Hafiz noted that this adjustment would reduce conflicts between public and private sector schedules. It will also improve family time and boost cross-border economic activities with Singapore.
Business and Economic Impact
Tebrau MP Jimmy Puah welcomed the change, pointing out that it would benefit businesses, particularly those with international dealings. The synchronized weekend with other regions, including Singapore, is expected to boost cross-border trade.
Historical Background
- 2014 Change: Johor switched to a Friday-Saturday weekend to honor Friday’s significance for Muslims and Islam as the state’s religion.
- 1994 Weekend: Before this, Johor followed a Saturday-Sunday weekend, implemented during Muhyiddin Yassin’s tenure as Chief Minister.
The return to the Saturday-Sunday weekend has been well-received by the public. Many social media users praised the move, calling it a “practical and down-to-earth” decision. Others highlighted that it aligns with Johor's preparations for a special economic zone with Singapore.
