The palace, entirely made of wood, is known as Istana Lembah or Istana Tepas. Located near Istana Iskandariah, it was built with bamboo walls and a roof supported by five beams and banana stalks, following a major flood in Perak in 1926.
Crafted by Haji Suffian and his sons from Seberang Perai, the palace was completed in 1931. Sultan Iskandar Shah, the 30th Sultan of Perak, moved here as Istana Negara was being replaced by the new Istana Iskandariah.
In 1933, after the completion of Istana Iskandariah, Sultan Iskandar Shah relocated, and Istana Lembah became the residence of the Perak royal family.
The name Istana Kenangan was given in the 1960s after restoration by Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, former Prime Minister of Malaysia. On November 16, 1986, it officially became the Royal Museum of Perak, where it remains today. It’s one of the many top attractions in Kuala Kangsar that you do not want to miss when you’re in the area.

One highlight in Kuala Kangsa that you shouldn’t miss is Masjid Ubudiah. This beautiful mosque, a marvel of Islamic architecture, stands proudly next to the Royal Mausoleum on Jalan Istana, Bukit Chandan.
Built in 1911, it was a gift from the 28th Sultan of Perak as a thank you to God for his recovery. Its name, which means “to submit to Allah’s will,” reflects its spiritual significance and makes it a proud symbol of Perak.
